Local heritage
Historical milestones: 1870 / 1908
The land around Red Bank was part of the Lenape homeland before European settlement. The borough's history traces colonial settlement to the seventeenth century and records the Red Bank name by 1736, associated with the color of the soil along the riverbank. Its position on the Navesink River made the community a natural place for waterfront activity.
Shipbuilding, river traffic and trade helped Red Bank grow. The borough's historic-preservation plan describes steamboat service beginning in the early nineteenth century, carrying produce, seafood and passengers. Shops along Broad Street served an expanding commercial center. After a major fire in 1882, rebuilding added brick commercial buildings, showing how the downtown evolved rather than appearing all at once.
Red Bank was established as a town in 1870 and incorporated as a borough in 1908. These dates describe changes in government, separate from the much earlier river settlement. The municipal account also records a brief period under the Shrewsbury City name. Together, the waterfront story and the government chronology explain Red Bank's transition from a river community to a regional center.
The theater now associated with Count Basie was built in 1925β1926 as the Carlton, presenting films and vaudeville. New Jersey Historic Trust records its later renaming in 1984. This landmark adds a twentieth-century cultural chapter to a history already shaped by navigation, commerce and the buildings of downtown.
