Atlantic Township becomes Colts Neck
The municipality now called Colts Neck was established as Atlantic Township in 1847, using territory from Freehold, Middletown and Shrewsbury townships. It adopted the Colts Neck name in 1962. The village name was already much older, so the name change connected the municipal government with an established local identity rather than creating a new community.
A village on Yellow Brook
Ellis's 1885 history describes Colt's Neck as the principal village of Atlantic Township, situated on Yellow Brook. It records stores in the early nineteenth century, a tavern operating by 1817 and a post office established in 1824. These businesses made the village a practical center for people living on nearby farms, providing supplies, lodging and communication.
The rural community behind the name
The history of the township includes scattered farms as well as the village. Merchants, tavern keepers and postal services served a countryside whose residents needed connections to neighboring communities. Distinguishing the older village from the 1847 township and the 1962 name change gives a clearer chronology. Each date records a different stage in the development of the place now recognized as Colts Neck.
