History of Freehold Borough
Municipal incorporation: 1919
A county seat before a borough
Freehold Borough became a separate borough municipality in 1919, but the downtown community had been a county center for more than two centuries. A courthouse opened in 1715, bringing legal business and public affairs into the village. The borough history also describes Scottish settlers arriving in the wider Freehold area after religious persecution. Its early development belongs to that longer colonial story, rather than beginning with the twentieth-century borough government.
War, travelers and commerce
The Battle of Monmouth in June 1778 placed the Freehold area in the path of the Revolutionary War. During the nineteenth century, the village developed beyond its courthouse role. The American Hotel dates to 1824, and Freehold Raceway opened in 1853. These institutions reflect different sides of the community: a place for travelers and business, and a destination for recreation.
The historic downtown
The borough's account describes Victorian homes and streets lined with trees alongside its commercial center. Together, the courthouse history, hotel and raceway explain why Freehold grew as a regional gathering place. Freehold Borough and the surrounding Freehold Township share an early history, but they have separate governments and should be identified individually when discussing modern municipal dates.
