One area, two municipal histories
Freehold's general local history includes both Freehold Township, established in 1693, and Freehold Borough, which became a separate borough in 1919. These are different jurisdictions with a shared early story. Ellis's county history describes the broader Freehold area through its farms, village institutions and public affairs, rather than treating every modern boundary as if it had always existed.
A courthouse village and rural surroundings
The courthouse opened in 1715 and helped establish the village as the county seat. Legal business and travel brought people into the center, while the surrounding countryside remained important to agriculture and household life. The relationship between the village and its rural neighbors explains how Freehold developed both a downtown identity and a wider township history.
The Revolutionary chapter
The Battle of Monmouth in June 1778 connects Freehold with the larger Revolutionary War story. The Monmouth County Historical Association identifies the Covenhoven House with British General Henry Clinton's stay before the battle. Domestic buildings and the surrounding landscape provide context for those military events. Reading the borough and township sources together gives a fuller picture while keeping their separate incorporation and formation dates clear.
