Organizing a new township
Manalapan Township was organized on March 9, 1848, from territory previously associated with Freehold. Its municipal history places the first meeting at Phebe Perrine's tavern in Englishtown, followed by the election of township officers later that month. Local government grew out of communities that already existed, rather than a newly founded settlement on empty land.
Farms, mills and village trade
Agriculture shaped early Manalapan. The township history describes grain and vegetable production, mills and the trades needed to support rural households. An 1873 atlas recorded twenty-eight businesses and seven mills. Township offices remained in Englishtown until that borough separated in 1888, after which local government moved to Tennent. These details show how village commerce and the surrounding farmland were closely connected.
A Revolutionary landscape
The Battle of Monmouth in June 1778 belongs to the area's earlier history. Manalapan's account also records Camp Vredenburgh during the Civil War and the later development of Monmouth Battlefield State Park. Subdivision growth in the twentieth century changed parts of the farming landscape. The municipal history therefore combines agricultural origins, military heritage and the transition toward a more residential community.
